help choosing new digital camera

Well it's dead. My digital camera has croaked and I want to get a new one.

I was hoping that you would share the brand name and some specs on your favorite digital camera. Is there anything you don't like about it?

What do I want it to do?

I would like it to
- take movies with sound
- take point & click snap shots, that don't have to be movie poster in size
- take decent close-ups
- take clear pictures of objects in motion (is that possible?)
- cost about $200-$250
- batteries- recharagble or no? which do you prefer?

I'm really floundering on this one. I will update the "would like to" list if anything else comes to mind.

Thank you very much for any and all help!!!!!

FE, I own the Sony Cyber-shot. It has 7.2 mega pixels and can take movies. It also has 5 different settings so you don't end up with poster size pictures on your PC.

The battery is rechargeable and last for 4+ hours of constant use.

It cost a little over $400.00 a few years ago when I got it, you can pick the same camera up for $250.00 today.
Hope that helps, and please let us know what you purchase.

The only suggestion I would have is to get the highest mega pixels you can afford. I have a sony cyber shot as well, it is a much older one when the most MP available was 4.0, mine is 3.2. It does take movies, but not very good. I would suggest, if you can budget it, a relatively inexpensive digital camera since the technology changes so fast, and a seperate hard drive video camera. I love my HD video camera. It takes wonderful movies. I know they have them at Costco now too.

Good luck!

Looks like I might be in the same boat soon if my camera doesn't show up again. I hate losing stuff!

Ginny- losing things is absolutely the pits. I hate it!

If you end up having to get a new camera, will you get the exact same one, or upgrade? Either way, I'd love to know what you would get!

I went with a Kodak C875 - just search for a review on CNET for it. The onlything I have trouble with is viewing the movies on anything but the kodak software. For pictures it's great.

Do you have photoshop as well or something to help you resize photo's?

Olympus Stylus 720 SW. It will cost a bit more than what you've said you want to spend but the little jewel is water and shock proof (and takes great pictures).

7.1 megapixels and a great little camera for anyone who may live a less-than-gentle lifestyle.

It looks like we will be heading in to the big city to check out cameras today. I'm making a list of the ones you have recommended and will certainly keep them in mind.

Thank you for your suggestions!!!!!

Hi Fiery,

I bought a Canon Powershot A550 with 7.0 mega pixels. It was around $180.

I have some pictures up from my vacation trip on my blog, so you can see for yourself how the pictures come out.

I see though now that I am too late in giving you the recommendation.

So, What did you end up with? If you don't mind the noseyness...

Tommy, thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Actually the shopping trip yesterday kind of fell apart and we haven't made any firm decisions. We are hoping to be able to do the touchy-feely thing with cameras in stock to get an idea of what they are like in person.

Fortunately I have a few ideas on which brands to look at- thanks to the wonderful people commenting on my blog!!!!! :-D

Unfortuantely at Best Buy, yesterday, the only cameras they had were the size of a deck of cards. What the heck is up with cameras that small?

Since when is smaller better? Jeez some of those you could flush and not even plug your toilet.

YIKES! :-)

Those were some awesome pictures on your site, they speak highly of the Canon you used. :-) And of course the person pushing the button. ;-)

Oh and Poodles- nosey would be asking what type of naughty pictures (if any) we had in mind for the camera.... asking which one falls under the category of curiosity!

Never fear, I will post again of the ongoing adventures of digital camera hunting.

:-D

I would guess they might have something to do with Math Porn and australians. :O

*looking around furtively*

shhhhhhh

*whispering*

I am going to pass on answering this on the grounds that it may or may not incriminate me further.

We also have a Canon PowerShot (don't recall the model - I'm at work and can't look it up now) and we love it. Actually we had replaced our earlier version with another one because we liked it so much.

I would stay away from the Olympus and Fuji's because they use XD memory cards... but that is personal opinion. I would stick with one that uses SD cards (or even the Sony Memory Sticks.)

But I highly recommend the Canon PowerShot line.

Oh yeah, BTW: it's not just about the megapixel count. My 5MP Canon takes better quality photos than my sister's 7MP Kodak. So you should look at the reviews including photo color/saturation, brightness, overall quality, etc.
